Most robotics projects fail at the seams. The integrator blames the panel builder, the panel builder blames the electrician, and the robot sits idle while everyone points at the PLC. Bedford Industrial Automation is a robotics integrator the Maritimes plants can hold to account for the whole job, because one team owns the whole cycle, from the first process walk to the phone that gets answered after go-live.
- Process analysis. We time the operation, map part flow, and find the constraint before anyone talks about robots.

The robot program, the PLC logic, and the panel all come from the same building. We program five PLC platforms, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Unitronics, so the cell fits the controls standard you already run.
Choosing between the major robot brands
No single robot brand wins every application. Five names cover most of the cells running in regional plants, and each has a home turf:
- Fanuc dominates machine tending and high-duty industrial cells, with a large installed base and deep spare parts availability.
- ABB is a common choice for material handling and palletizing.
- Universal Robots built the cobot category and suits collaborative applications and fast redeployment between tasks.
- Omron cobots pair naturally with plants already standardized on Omron controls.
- Yaskawa has a long record in welding and heavy payload handling.
The right arm falls out of the requirements, not the brochure: payload, reach, cycle time, parts availability in the region, and what your maintenance team already knows. That is why a robotics assessment starts with your process, not with a brand. Whatever arm the numbers point to, the robot is only part of the cell. Grippers, fixtures, feeders, guarding, and controls make up the rest, and that is where projects are won or lost. A well-built cell talks to your line over standard protocols, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or Modbus TCP, so the robot becomes a device on your network instead of an island with its own pendant-only logic.
Cobot or industrial robot
Cobots are sold as the easy answer. Sometimes they are. The honest comparison runs on four axes:
- Floor space. A cobot cell that passes its risk assessment without hard guarding takes less floor than a fenced industrial cell. In a plant where every square metre is spoken for, that matters.
- Cycle time. In collaborative mode a cobot runs at reduced speed and force. If the process needs a fast cycle, an industrial robot behind guarding or area scanners usually wins.
- Payload. Cobots handle parts in the range a person could lift. Heavy parts, long reaches, and hard accelerations belong to industrial arms.
- Safety. ISO 10218 governs robot system safety. ISO/TS 15066 adds power and force limits for collaborative applications. The risk assessment covers the whole application, including the gripper and the part. A cobot holding a knife blade is not a collaborative application.
We run this assessment before recommending hardware, because the wrong class of robot is an expensive thing to discover after installation.
The labour math has changed
Every plant manager in the region knows the posting that stays open. Experienced operators are retiring, fewer people are entering the trades, and rural plants compete with cities that compete with the rest of the country. The workforce gap in the Maritimes is structural, not a cycle you can wait out.
Automation does not replace the people you have. It covers the shifts you cannot fill and moves skilled people off dull, repetitive stations onto work that needs judgment. The business case is arithmetic, not faith: the loaded cost of the unfilled positions per shift, the number of shifts, the overtime you pay to cover the gap, and the scrap and rework tied to fatigue, set against the installed cost of one cell.

Funding for Maritime manufacturers
Maritime manufacturers rarely need to carry the full cost of a productivity project alone. ACOA, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, funds technology adoption and productivity improvements for regional businesses, often as interest-free repayable contributions. Provincial agencies add their own layers: Opportunities NB, Invest Nova Scotia, and Innovation PEI all run programs aimed at exactly this kind of capital project. Programs and intake windows change, so verify current criteria with the agency before you plan around them.
Two things matter more than the program names. First, most funding must be approved before you buy, so the application comes before the purchase order, not after. Second, applications need substance: quotes, layouts, and a defensible productivity case. A robotics assessment produces exactly those documents.
