Platforms we work in

Bedford Industrial Automation is a SCADA system integrator New Brunswick and the wider Maritimes can reach by road, based in Dieppe with our own panel shop. We build on the SCADA platforms Maritime plants already run, and we recommend new ones based on tag count, licensing model, and who has to maintain the system after commissioning. Not based on what we feel like selling.

Under the screens, we work in the protocols your equipment speaks: EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and RTU, PROFINET, OPC UA, and DNP3 for telemetry. We program the PLCs on the other end too, across Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Unitronics.

From plant floor to pump station

Plant-wide monitoring is the core job: one system that shows production, utilities, and packaging on consistent screens, with one alarm philosophy across all of it. Operators should not have to remember which of four aging terminals shows the boiler.

For municipalities and utilities, we build water and wastewater telemetry: lift stations, reservoirs, and well fields polled over cellular or licensed radio using DNP3 or Modbus, with store-and-forward for comms dropouts and alarm callout when a level or a pump fault needs a human.

Alarming and reporting get engineered, not bolted on. That means rationalized alarms with defined priorities and responses instead of a flood of nuisance chatter, and automatic shift, production, and compliance reports that pull from the historian instead of a clipboard.

Upgrade legacy SCADA, keep the history

The failure pattern is familiar. A PanelView Standard nobody can buy parts for. RSView32 or an old InTouch runtime on a Windows XP machine. One retired employee who knew how it all worked. The system still runs, so it never gets budget, until the day it does not run.

A migration does not have to mean starting from zero. Tag databases can be exported and mapped. Screens can be converted or rebuilt to current standards. Historian data can be migrated so ten years of trends survive the change. We stage the new system to run in parallel with the old one, then cut over in a planned window, so production does not pay for the upgrade twice.

Screens operators trust, in both languages

We design to high-performance HMI principles, in line with ISA 101 guidance: grey backgrounds, colour reserved for abnormal conditions, analog values shown against their normal operating ranges. On a screen like that, a developing problem stands out in seconds. On a rainbow mimic with forty blinking objects, it hides in plain sight.

In New Brunswick, crews work in English, French, or both. We build bilingual operator screens with language switching at runtime, so each operator reads navigation, alarm text, and messages in their working language. An alarm an operator only half-understands is an alarm that gets acknowledged and ignored.

From historian to decisions

A SCADA system that only shows live values is doing half the job. We set up historians with intent: which tags to log, at what rate, with deadbands tuned so the data stays useful without drowning the disk. Then we build the views that make the data pay.

  • Dashboards that give a plant manager the day at a glance without opening operator screens.
  • Downtime tracking that captures stop reasons at the machine, so the argument about the worst line ends with numbers.
  • Trend tools operators can actually use during an upset, not just after one.
  • Groundwork for OEE and regulatory reporting, fed by data you already produce.

One local team, from panel to screen

SCADA projects fail in the gaps between contractors. The integrator blames the electrician, the electrician blames the panel builder, and the schedule eats it. We close those gaps by owning all of it. Bedford designs the system, builds the control panels in our own shop, writes the PLC and SCADA code, sends Red Seal industrial electricians to install it, and commissions the result. Engineering-led, with a B.Eng on staff, and one company to call when something needs an answer.

That matters more out here. Maritime industry runs on seafood plants with hard seasonal windows, forestry and pulp operations far from any airport, and manufacturers who cannot idle a line while a remote-only firm books flights. Commissioning always surfaces something: a wiring fault, a comms link to a lift station that drops at night, a driver that will not connect. Someone has to stand in front of the panel. What is the difference between SCADA and HMI?An HMI is the screen an operator uses at a machine or panel, often a dedicated touchscreen like a Weintek or C-More unit. SCADA is the software layer above it that collects data from many PLCs and sites, handles alarming and history, and gives you a plant-wide or system-wide view. Most plants need both, and they should be designed together so tags, alarms, and screens stay consistent.
How much does a SCADA system cost?It depends on tag count, licensing model, redundancy requirements, and how much panel and wiring work is involved. Platforms price differently: Ignition licenses by server with unlimited tags and clients, while others charge per tag or per client seat, which changes the math as you grow. A scoped consult with a tag count and an I/O list is the honest way to get a real number.
Can we replace an old PanelView without replacing the PLC?Usually, yes. If the PLC communicates over a supported protocol such as EtherNet/IP, or over DH+ through a gateway, the screen can be swapped for a PanelView Plus, a Weintek unit, or a full SCADA client while the PLC keeps running. The application is converted or rebuilt, tags are remapped, and the changeover happens in a planned window.
Which SCADA platform is best for water and wastewater?VTScada is a frequent choice for municipal water and wastewater because of its built-in redundancy, alarm notification, and driver support for telemetry protocols like DNP3. Ignition also handles utility telemetry well and scales into plant-wide use. The right answer depends on your existing PLCs, your operator count, and your licensing preference, which is why we work in both.
