Geography matters here. The Maritimes is a region of long highways and lean maintenance teams. A seafood processor in Charlottetown, a sawmill outside Truro, or a manufacturer in Burnside cannot always justify a controls specialist on every shift. What we troubleshoot on site

Emergency calls land in a handful of recurring failure modes. We handle them with the same people who program and build these systems every week.

  • PLC faults. We program five platforms: Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact and Unitronics. Faulted processors, corrupted programs, dead I/O cards, and stalled communications over EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or PROFINET.
  • Drive failures. VFD overcurrent and overvoltage trips, blown output stages, lost encoder feedback, and parameter sets that disappeared with a dead drive.
  • Panel damage. Water ingress, arc damage, failed power supplies, cooked relays. Our in-house panel shop backs the field work with repairs and replacement assemblies.
  • Pneumatic loss. Failed solenoid valves, leaking cylinders, dropped header pressure and stuck actuators.
  • Line stoppages. When nothing shows an obvious fault, we trace the interlock chain through the logic until the real blocker surfaces.

Remote first, truck second

A large share of emergency stoppages are not hardware failures. They are a faulted routine, a tripped interlock nobody can find on the HMI, a comms dropout, or a drive holding an old fault. None of those need a person standing in front of the panel. They need someone who can read the program.

That is why our first move is a phone call plus secure remote access. If your plant allows a VPN session or a supervised remote connection to the controller, a programmer can go online with the PLC, read the fault table, watch the ladder logic execute in real time and find the rung holding the line. Restarts that would otherwise wait for a road trip often happen during the first call.

If remote diagnosis points to a genuine hardware failure, nothing is lost. The technician now rolls with the right parts and a confirmed diagnosis instead of a guess.

What downtime actually costs

Downtime is rarely priced honestly inside a plant. The visible cost is idle labour. The real cost stacks faster: lost throughput that never comes back, scrap from product stranded mid-process, overtime to catch up, missed shipping windows, and penalty clauses on supply contracts. In food and seafood processing, add spoilage and a wasted sanitation cycle. In forestry and other continuous processes, add the restart itself, which can take longer than the outage that caused it.

  • Hotline. You describe the failure: which machine or line, the symptoms, any fault codes, and what changed before it stopped.
  • On-call technician. The problem goes to an on-call technician who starts remote diagnostics where your systems allow it, and gives you a straight ETA when a site visit is needed.
  • Parts sourcing. If a component is dead, we source the replacement. Our panel shop builds and repairs panels constantly, so hunting down relays, power supplies, breakers and I/O modules is normal business, not a special errand.
  • Root-cause report. After the line is running, you get a written explanation of what failed, why it failed, and what would prevent a repeat. An emergency that ends without a root cause is just a scheduled repeat.

Can you troubleshoot a PLC you did not install?Yes, on the five platforms we program: Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact and Unitronics. The IEC 61131-3 languages behind most industrial code, ladder logic especially, are consistent enough that an experienced programmer can navigate an unfamiliar program. A recent program backup and any electrical drawings you have will speed the work up considerably.
What information should I have ready when I call the emergency line?The machine or line name, any fault codes on the HMI or drive display, and what changed right before the stoppage, such as a power blip, a product changeover or recent maintenance. If you know your PLC platform and whether a program backup exists, say so. Those details let the on-call technician start diagnosing during the first call instead of after arriving on site.
Can a stopped line really be restarted remotely?Often, yes. Many stoppages are logic conditions rather than broken hardware: a tripped interlock, a faulted routine, or a drive holding an old fault that needs a reset. With secure remote access to the controller, a programmer can find and clear those conditions without travel. Genuine hardware failures still need hands on site, but remote diagnosis means the visit starts with the right parts.
