What runs on Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island’s industry is concentrated and specialised. Potato and vegetable processing at scale, seafood and shellfish plants around the coast, dairy and food manufacturing, a bioscience and pharmaceutical manufacturing cluster centred on Charlottetown, and aerospace work at Slemon Park near Summerside. Behind them sit the island’s water, wastewater and power systems.

The constraint every island plant knows is supply. A part that is a day away on the mainland is a longer wait here, and a contractor who has to be flown or ferried in is a different proposition than one who drives across a bridge.

Island plants often end up with a compromise: either a local contractor whose scope stops at part of the problem, or a specialist from far enough away that every visit becomes a project. Bedford is close enough to drive and broad enough to finish the job.

Practically, that means a Charlottetown project can be scoped on site, built and bench-tested in the Dieppe shop, and delivered across the bridge as a working panel with its drawings. Site time is wiring and commissioning. It also means one contract instead of coordinating a designer, a panel builder, a programmer and an electrician across the strait.

Working in Charlottetown

We have people serving the Island, and the Confederation Bridge makes this a drive rather than a shipment. Summerside and the western end of the island are a similar run. This is a drive, not a logistics exercise.

For planned work, panels travel from Dieppe already built and exercised, which keeps island site time short. For scheduled maintenance, the trip is short enough that a service programme is realistic to keep rather than aspirational.
