Private 5G on the Plant Floor: When the Network Becomes Part of the Machine

Big food and chemical plants are starting to treat wireless as part of the machine. A February 2026 NTT DATA release said Cargill now runs a private 5G network at 50 of its sites around the world. That number caught our eye at Bedford.

What Cargill actually did

The NTT DATA release shared on 19 February 2026 said the rollout began in March 2025. In under a year, Cargill went from a pilot to 50 live sites out of about 1,100 plants. Most are in the United States, some in Europe, with more regions under review.

The network gives workers fast, low-delay access to plant apps on phones and rugged tablets. It also acts as a base for robotics work. CIO reporting from February 2026 said Cargill plans to add private 5G to more than 100 sites per year going forward.

Why not just use Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi 6 works well for most plants. Bedford uses it every week on jobs in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI. It is cheap, well known, and the parts are easy to source.

Private 5G earns its keep when a plant has a lot of moving machines, a lot of cameras, or a lot of mobile screens that all need the same network at the same time. The CIO piece noted Cargill is testing robot dogs at one site in Amsterdam. That is the kind of load where 5G stops being a buzzword and starts being part of the design.

What a Canadian plant should ask first

Most of our customers do not need private 5G yet. The ones who do are running fleets of mobile robots, live video on every line, or mobile control screens that walk with the operator.

Before you call a cellular vendor, ask three plain questions. How many wireless devices will be on the floor in three years? How bad is a one-second delay on each one? And who will own the network after it is built? If the answers point to dozens of robots, fast control loops, and a small in-house team, private 5G is worth costing out. If not, a well-planned Wi-Fi 6 design will do the job for a lot less money.

The trap of buying too much network

Networks are easy to over-buy. Vendors will quote you a full private 5G build because that is what they sell. Bedford sees the same trap with control panels and PLCs. The best fix is to start with the work, not the gear.

Walk the floor. Count the mobile screens, the scanners, the cameras, and the robots that move. Map where they go and how often they talk to a server. That map tells you what kind of network you need. It also tells you which parts of the plant can stay on wired Ethernet, which is still the most reliable choice for any machine that does not move.

The small lesson for single-site plants

Even one-plant shops can take something useful from the Cargill story. The win is not the 5G logo. It is the habit of planning wireless coverage before the robots arrive.

Most plants we visit added wireless one access point at a time as new needs came up. That leaves dead spots, surprise costs, and a network nobody really owns. A simple site survey, a tidy coverage map, and a written plan for who maintains the gear will save real money the first time a mobile robot or a tablet-based HMI shows up on the floor. That kind of homework pays back at any size of plant.
