The gap is not about machines
The gap is about how projects get framed. Many plants start with a big plan. They pick a flashy use case. Then the pilot stalls. Cost grows. Scope drifts. Nobody is sure who owns the win.
The plants that move past the pilot stage do one thing first. They pick a small, clear problem. They put numbers on it. They give it an owner. Then they ship it.
That sounds simple. It is not the same as easy. The hard part is saying no to all the other ideas in the room so the first one can finish.
What a good first project looks like
A good first project has a tight scope. One line. One shift. One metric. It might be a panel rebuild. It might be a vibration sensor on a key motor. It might be a new HMI screen that cuts changeover time by ten minutes.
The point is the scope. A small win you can measure beats a big plan you cannot. Once the first win lands, the next one is easier to sell inside the plant. People stop debating if the work pays off. They start asking what is next.
This is also how a plant builds trust with its integrator. Both sides learn how the other works. The second project goes faster than the first.
The labour side of the story
The same December 2025 reports point to labour as the top push for new automation. Plants want to free up their skilled people for the work only they can do. Canadian shops feel this more, not less. Licensed industrial electricians are hard to find. Wait times for service calls have grown.
A Control.com December 2025 roundup noted that Siemens plans to help train 200,000 people in advanced manufacturing skills. That is a long road. The shorter road for a plant manager today is to scope automation work that gives your current team room to breathe.
Free your best people from the jobs a sensor or a small PLC change can handle. Then point them at the work that only experienced hands can do.
Picking the right platform matters less than you think

Where to start in early 2026
Pick one line. Pick one pain point. Ask your team what they would fix first if they had a free week. That conversation often points to the best first project.
Then scope that work so it can ship inside one quarter. Write the success metric down before you start. Pick the person who owns it. Walk the line with your controls partner before the quote, not after.
Year-end is a good time to sort the pilots from the production deployments. The ones you choose to ship will set the tone for the year. Small wins, picked well and shipped clean, are the way Canadian plants close the gap.
