Who’s Going to Wire the Plant? Canada’s Skilled-Trades Push in 2026
If you are planning electrical or controls work at a Canadian plant in 2026, you have likely felt the squeeze. Quotes take longer to come back. Lead times are wider. Crews are booked further out. Bedford lives this every week.
What the trade press is saying
A 2026 Canadian Electrical Worker piece on demand for electricians, carpenters, and plumbers put it plainly. Industrial and construction electricians lead Ontario demand lists, and workers with PLC and large-commercial experience earn the top wages. The article said about 20 to 25 percent of the current trade workforce is over 55. Construction alone needs more than 85,000 added workers by 2032.
That last number matters because every new battery plant, mine, port, and food line pulls from the same pool. There are not two pools of electricians. There is one.
Why this hits plant work hardest
Industrial electrical work is not the same as house wiring. A licensed industrial electrician with PLC time can read a panel print, troubleshoot a drive, and bring a line back up at 2 a.m. That is a deep skill set, and it takes years to build.
When demand spikes, those workers go to the highest bidder first. Big build sites win. Smaller plants doing a panel upgrade or a control retrofit wait longer or pay more. Bedford has seen schedules slip on jobs we used to start the next week.
What the federal government has signalled
Ottawa has been signalling a larger push on apprenticeship training and Red Seal trades. Details are still rolling out as we publish this, but the direction is clear. Expect more support for in-class training time, completion bonuses, and faster paths to certification.
The honest read is that any policy help will take years to land on the floor. A new apprentice signed up in 2026 is a journeyperson in 2030. Useful, real, and not a fix for this year’s quote.
What plants can do now
Three things help. First, plan farther out. If you used to call an integrator two weeks before a shutdown, try eight. Bedford can usually find a window if we see it early. Last-minute calls are where the price climbs.
Second, scope work in small, clean pieces. A panel rebuild with a clear drawing set, a known PLC platform, and a tidy I/O list moves faster through any shop. We support Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Unitronics, and the jobs that go smoothly are the ones with good prints before the truck rolls.
Third, take care of your in-house people. The plants keeping their best maintenance electricians in 2026 are the ones offering tickets, training time, and a clear path to picking up PLC skills. That is cheaper than losing them to a build site down the road.
The long view
