What the west end runs on

Summerside is the second city of Prince Edward Island and the industrial anchor of its western half. The plants here do not belong to one sector. Slemon Park holds an aerospace and precision manufacturing cluster: machining, component work, overhaul and test. Around it sit food and seafood processing, potato handling and storage, agriculture-linked plants, and the wind generation that feeds the island grid.

Different products, the same control problems underneath. A grading line that has to run clean through a short season. A washdown room where the enclosure rating matters as much as the logic inside it. A compressor that half the building depends on without anyone saying so out loud. A processor nobody wants to touch because the person who wrote the program has retired.

Summerside also runs its own municipal electric utility, which is unusual for a city this size and says something about the place. Load, continuity and generation are ordinary conversations here, not specialist ones. Plant managers in this part of the island usually know where their single points of failure are. What is harder to find is one contractor who can act on all of them.

The part is farther away, the specialist is farther away, and every hour of that distance ends up on your production report.
