What runs in Halifax
Halifax Regional Municipality holds the largest concentration of industry in the Maritimes, and very little of it looks alike. Container terminals and the distribution chain behind them run conveyors, sortation and gate systems. The shipyards and marine fabrication shops run heavy machine tools, cranes and test equipment. Burnside in Dartmouth packs several hundred light manufacturing, food and distribution operations into a single industrial park. Around all of it sit the utilities that a region of this size needs: water and wastewater treatment, power generation, and the process plant inside hospitals and universities.

Controls work in a harbour city
Two things shape this work in Halifax. The first is salt air. Enclosures, terminations, disconnects and outdoor sensors corrode faster near the harbour than the catalogue rating suggests, so enclosure ratings and material choices get decided against the actual location rather than a default. The second is that terminals, utilities and processing plants run on tight shift patterns, so a retrofit gets a narrow planned window and no second attempt.
Retrofits on a running line therefore stay conservative. The existing program is uploaded and archived before anything is touched, changes are staged offline in a copy, cutover happens during a planned stop, and the last known good program stays ready to reload. If the cutover looks wrong, it goes back and production keeps running.
