Machine Installation and Wiring

New machines wired, inspected, and running, without your maintenance crew carrying the whole job.

From crate to commissioned

A new machine arrives on a truck. It runs when the power feed is sized right, the wiring is landed right, and every I/O point checks out. That is the job.

Our Red Seal industrial electricians handle the electrical scope from receiving to first cycle:

  • Power feed. Disconnects, breakers, and conductors sized to the machine nameplate and the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Motor connections. Terminations, rotation checks, and VFD parameters verified before the machine sees load.
  • Control wiring. Every field device landed, labelled, and rung out against the drawings.
  • I/O checkout. Point-by-point verification with the PLC before the machine makes its first move.

Because we program Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Unitronics, the same team that wires the machine can sit at the laptop during commissioning. No waiting on a second contractor when an input reads wrong.

Plant moves without lost weeks

Moving a production line is mostly an information problem. The machine worked in the old building. Whether it works in the new one depends on how well the teardown was documented.

Before we lift a single cable, we photograph terminations, tag every conductor, and build a cable schedule. De-termination happens against that record. Reinstallation happens against the same record. When drawings do not exist, we create them, so the move produces documentation your maintenance team keeps.

We plan moves around production. That can mean phased teardown so part of the line keeps running, or a weekend cutover with power and network ready at the new location before the machine arrives. The goal is a defined outage window, not an open-ended one where the line sits dark while someone figures out which wire went where.

Field wiring, sensors, and networks

The distance between a machine and its panel is where installs go wrong. Field wiring is our panel shop’s work carried onto your floor, and the same drawing set governs both ends.

  • Sensors and instruments. Proximity switches, photoeyes, encoders, and analog devices landed with correct shielding and segregation from power wiring.
  • Safety circuits. E-stops, gate interlocks, and light curtains wired dual-channel to safety relays or safety PLCs, consistent with ISO 13849 circuit categories.
  • Network drops. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP runs with proper cable, connectors, and separation from VFD output cables that generate electrical noise.

Panels built in our shop arrive with terminal strips labelled to match the field devices. One drawing set, one wire numbering scheme, one team accountable when a point does not read.

Inspections handled, province by province

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island each run their own electrical permit and inspection process. The Canadian Electrical Code applies in all three, but the paperwork, the inspectors, and the scheduling differ. We handle that coordination so your machine is not sitting installed and unpowered while a permit catches up.

Before the machine runs production, we walk the safety basics with your team: e-stop function and reach, guard interlock operation, lockout points identified per CSA Z460, and safeguarding checked against CSA Z432. Red Seal certification is interprovincial by design, so the same electricians can work your Moncton plant and your Charlottetown plant under one scope.

One team on your floor

A typical machine install has four companies on site. Riggers set the machine. Millwrights level and align it. The OEM tech commissions it. The electrician wires it. When those four do not talk, the schedule slips one trade at a time.

Bedford is built to be the one that coordinates. We are engineering-led, with a B.Eng on staff, and one team covers design, panels, code, install, and support. In practice that means:

  • Conduit and tray routed before the riggers need the floor clear.
  • Power live and verified before the OEM tech’s flight lands.
  • A programmer available during commissioning for I/O changes or ladder logic edits, on any of our five PLC platforms.

Built for the Maritimes plants

the Maritimes’ plants are spread out. A seafood processor on the shore, a sawmill up a woods road, and a fabrication shop in an industrial park can be hours apart, and OEM support for their machines is usually much further away than that. Local installation capacity matters here in a way it does not in southern Ontario.

Common questions

Do I need an electrical permit to install a new machine?In most cases, yes. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island each require permits for new electrical work such as a machine feed, and the work is inspected against the Canadian Electrical Code. The contractor doing the wiring normally pulls the permit and books the inspection. We handle both as part of the installation scope.
Can you wire a machine that riggers and millwrights are already installing?Yes, that split is normal. Rigging and mechanical installation are separate trades from electrical, and most installs involve all three. We coordinate directly with the other contractors on sequencing so power, conduit, and control wiring are ready when the mechanical work finishes.
What information do you need to quote a machine installation?The machine’s electrical drawings and nameplate data are the most useful items: voltage, full load amps, and control requirements. Photos of the intended location and your existing distribution help us size the feed. If drawings do not exist, a site visit fills the gap, since the nameplate, the panel, and your existing distribution tell us most of what the paperwork would have.
Do you commission the machine, or does the OEM?Usually the OEM commissions its own machine, and our job is to have power, wiring, and I/O verified before their tech arrives, since OEM techs bill whether the machine is ready or not. When there is no OEM tech, or the machine is used equipment without factory support, our programmers can commission it directly. We program Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Unitronics PLCs.
