PLC Programming Across the Maritimes

Five PLC platforms, programmed in-house
Bedford writes and maintains code on five platforms: Allen-Bradley (MicroLogix through CompactLogix and ControlLogix, in RSLogix and Studio 5000), Schneider Electric (Modicon controllers in Machine Expert and Control Expert), Omron (CP1 and CJ in CX-Programmer, NJ and NX in Sysmac Studio), Phoenix Contact (PLCnext) and Unitronics (the combined PLC and HMI units common on packaged OEM equipment).
We work in the IEC 61131-3 languages your electricians already read. Ladder logic for sequencing and interlocks, function block for process loops, structured text where math and data handling get awkward in rungs. On the network side, we commission and troubleshoot EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and RTU, and PROFINET, along with the VFDs, HMIs and remote I/O that hang off them.
All programming is done in-house. If your plant runs a platform outside these five, say so on the first call and we will tell you straight whether it is work we should take.
New machines and running-line retrofits
New machine programming starts on paper. We write the sequence of operations with your operators, build the I/O list, then code the states, interlocks, alarms and HMI screens against that document. When the panel is built in our shop, the program is loaded and exercised on the bench, so commissioning on your floor is wiring and tuning, not first drafts. Retrofits on a running line are a different discipline. The line has orders against it, so the sequence stays conservative:
- Upload and archive the current program before anything is touched.
- Study the logic offline and stage changes in a copy, never the live file.
- Use online edits only for low-risk changes, and never for safety or core sequencing logic.
- Cut over during a planned stop, with the last known good program ready to reload.
- If anything looks wrong at cutover, roll straight back to the old program and production keeps running.
Troubleshooting when the line is down
Most PLC service calls are not programming problems. They are a dead channel on an input card, a 24VDC supply sagging under load, a comm timeout on an EtherNet/IP drive, or an analog signal scaled wrong after a transmitter swap. The code just reports the symptom.
So diagnosis runs in a fixed order: pull the processor and module fault codes, watch the logic live while the machine runs, then verify I/O at the terminals, forcing and metering points until the story in the program matches the story in the panel. Because Bedford crews include Red Seal industrial electricians, one visit covers both sides of the problem: field wiring gets traced while the rungs get walked.

Standards, documentation and backups you keep
Undocumented logic is a liability you pay for at 2 a.m. Our code follows plain conventions: consistent tag names, rung comments that explain why and not just what, routines broken up by machine section, and alarm messages an operator can act on without calling anyone.
At handover your team gets the commented program file, the I/O list, a written description of what changed and why, and backup copies of every program version we touched. The code runs your plant, so you hold it. No locked blocks, no source files held hostage in our office.
We also document other people’s programs. If you run a machine whose logic nobody understands anymore, rebuilding tags, comments and drawings into something readable is routine work.
One team from panel to program
Controls projects get expensive at the handoffs. A design firm draws it, a panel builder wires it, an integrator codes it, an electrician installs it, and when the machine faults, each one points at the next. Bedford runs this service as one crew: design, panels, code, installation and support all come from the same shop.
That structure changes how the programming goes. The work is engineering-led, with a B.Eng on staff, and the people scoping your project sit in the same building as the panel shop wiring your enclosure and the Red Seal electricians who will land the wire on site. Drawings match the code because the same people own both. And when you call for support a year later, you are not explaining your plant to a stranger.

PLC work in this region has its own character. Seafood and food and beverage plants run washdown environments that are hard on sensors and enclosures. Sawmills and wood products lines carry dust that finds every gap in a panel. Packaging lines change over constantly, and aquaculture sites put controls in salt air at the end of a long road. Seasonal peaks such as lobster landings and harvest mean downtime costs more in some months than others, and both the code and the support have to respect that.
